How Much Does Copywriting Cost? And why it's important to be up-front
Ask any copywriter how much their services cost and you’ll invariably get the same response…it depends.
And there’s good reason for this. There are a number of factors that can impact pricing.
Things like, how long it will take; how much research is involved; what’s the client trying to achieve; understanding the audience and voice of customer data; keyword research; competitor analysis; does the client already have brand guidelines or do we need to dig into those?
All of these things matter, and they all take time. Because copywriting isn’t just words.
But.
I still believe it’s important to be clear up-front about pricing as much as possible. Here’s why.
They had me at hello.
Last week I saw an ad on Facebook for a new gym in my area.
It was perfect for me.
My only needs for a gym are that it looks clean, it’s open around the clock, and it has a sauna on site so that I can trick myself into going.
And this one ticked all my boxes. I had also just eaten more than my fair share of biscuits so the timing made it feel like fate.
I clicked through to the landing page, already planning to spend the weekend making the most of the facilities.
And my heart sank.
The dreaded form. With zero information about cost. Just a casual, Give us your details (so we can spam you forever) and a member of our team will be in touch.
And that was where they lost me.
Firstly, I don’t know about you but if I’m excited about something I’m likely to want to buy it there and then. By adding in this extra delay they’ve essentially just sat on my balloon.
Secondly, it’s far too early in the transaction for me to be giving over all my details.
And thirdly, now someone is going to call me? Meaning I’ll have to endure a sales spiel and the potential awkwardness of having telling them that it’s out of my budget anyway?
We’re British. We don’t like to feel awkward.
And I don’t have time for this. I feel tricked, I’m a little stressed, I don’t feel good about the gym anymore.
I’m off to eat more biscuits.
Number one rule of marketing. It’s all about how you make people feel.
You get people excited, you show them this wonderful thing that’s exactly what they’ve been looking for.
You do not then add in delay, confuse them, and stress them out.
And that’s why I clearly display my copywriting prices on my website.
No tricks, no labyrinth, no hoops to jump through. Just clarity and transparency.
And nobody’s time gets wasted.
That’s why you can find my copywriting fees here, where I’ve created a super helpful menu of Services & Prices. Where it’s not been possible to be precise, you’ll find a cost guide.
And if you don’t see what you’re looking for, give me a shout and I’ll see what I can do. As long as it’s word related, of course. I can’t get you a unicorn.
